We know that there are gender differences in illness and symptoms for men and women. I will describe what causes these differences and which potential explanation is the most likely to account for differences and reasons in longevity between females and males in this written assignment. We should not ignore these important elements to maintain our health more effectively and efficiently.
Today, females, on average living longer than males in the world. What are the reasons for this phenomenon? I will raise biological factors. The most crucial point is "men and women are different down to the cellular and molecular levels"(Johnson, 2013, 2:47). Every cell has a sex, and males and females are different across all of our organs. Therefore, we can say that it is a matter of course to causing differences in diseases and symptoms between them.
Additionally, some research indicates that estrogen can prevent some kinds of cancer and coronary heart diseases. Estrogen is a female hormone made in the ovaries which functions as a circulating hormone to act on distal target tissues. (Simpson, 2003) According to Ogden(2017), estrogen "improves lipid profiles and can protect against cardiovascular disease" (p.86). Moreover, Johnson insists that estrogen is useful to improve survival from lung cancer based on her research. (Johnson, 2013)
Gender conditions and health beliefs based on the conditions also bring differences in the health of each gender. In my country, people think that women basically should pay attention and control and habits such as sleeping, eating, and exercise. On the other hand, men are taken for granted to working hard every day and ignore their physical or mental health when they young. Many men lose precious time getting accurate diagnoses and treatments because they prioritize their work and do not take treatment seriously. This difference influence life expectancy in my country for sure. (Ogden, 2017)
Also, risk perception differences between men and women bring a difference in life longevity. Ogden(2017) states that men are more likely to underestimate their risk for diseases or injury and prefer unsafe activity than women. Indeed, about 80 percent of traffic fatality accidents are caused by male drivers in my country (based on common sense).
In conclusion, biological factors such as differences in cells or hormones, gender conditions created by each society, and health beliefs and related behavior bring differences in illness or symptoms between males and females. We might need to consider our health regarding men and females as a different existence.
