4. If you were to implement one, small, simple project in your local area or family in support of the environment, what would it be? Why?

5. One or two sentences of your own personal reflection on something you learned this week.

The Learning Journal entry should be a minimum of 400 words and not more than 750 words. Use APA citations and references if you use ideas from the readings or other sources.

2. Explain why you took this course and what you hope to learn from it.

I majored in an earth science course at university when I was a high school student. Since then, my interest in the environment has deepened, and I have been thinking about many themes, such as solving environmental problems. This is why I took this course.

Through this course, I would like to deepen my knowledge about improving the environment and realizing a sustainable society while learning from my colleagues about the current situation in each country of the world.

Japan is an island country that is surrounded by the oceans. Therefore Japan has long been plagued by marine pollution, or environmental issues related to the sea. It is also a problem that the Japanese government must solve in the long term.

Plastic waste is a serious problem all over the world because plastic micro-particles can accumulate in plankton, harming ecosystems and human health (UNEP, 2016). The Japanese have long liked to eat seafood and consume the fourth largest amount of fish and seafood in the world (Lang'at, 2018). Most of their fish is sourced locally from the oceans nearby; therefore, we are vulnerable to marine pollution caused by plastic micro-particles and other pollutants.

It is essential to limit plastic waste discharge to deal with this problem. I never throw away trash outdoors, do not use plastic bags, and also cooperate in recycling. Also, we can change the packaging of your product to a material other than plastic if it is possible. Supermarkets in my neighborhood are promoting plastic-suppressed packaging, and I am willing to buy that product.

4. If you were to implement one, small, simple project in your local area or family in support of the environment, what would it be? Why?

There is a sea near my house, and many tourists visit there. Some people throw away trash or unintentionally forget stuff, which will flow into the ocean. We can not get rid of that garbage anymore.

Therefore, I propose a project to pick up trash in the community on weekends. And I will provide benefits for those participating in the project to eat local seafood at a low price.

5. One or two sentences of your own personal reflection on something you learned this week.

I was impressed by learning about various functions of the earth and our bodies, such as energy and air circulation systems, etc. I want to deepen my knowledge more.
