The Learning Journal is a tool for self-reflection on the learning process. In addition to completing directed tasks, you should use the Learning Journal to document your activities, record problems you may have encountered and to draft answers for Discussion Forums and Assignments. The Learning Journal should be updated regularly (on a weekly basis), as the learning journals will be assessed as part of your Final Grade.

Making reference to resources listed in this unit's Reading Assignment, please address the following:

  • What is your own definition of art?
  • In this first week of the course, what do you think will be your strengths and weaknesses in studying Art History?

1. What is your own definition of art?

Oxford defines art as "the expression or application or human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or scripture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power" (Lexico Dictionaries produced by OXFORD, n.d.). But, art is very diverse and complex, and each person has a different definition.

My definition of art is "something beautiful in human eyes." The elements of what we find beautiful and pleasurable include colors, shapes, textures, sounds (vibrations), tastes, texts, etc. The range of human feeling is vast, and different people have different things that they feel this is art. If anyone finds the work beautiful, I think it's an art (including the author).

As John Dewey said, art is the most effective mode of communications that exists (The Art Assignment, 2020); for someone, art is a way to convey feelings through paintings, making sounds, or movements without having to speak in words. When we encounter an old work, we can read the senses, thoughts, and even the author's life who lived at that time.

2. In this first week of the course, what do you think will be your strengths and weaknesses in studying Art History?

My strength in studying Art History is I like art. People in my country have always loved art from ancient. It is customary to enjoy different arts in every four seasons, which is a part of everyday life. I also have been familiar with this culture since I was a child, and I grew up influenced by my parents, who like classical music and painting, and so on.

My weakness in studying Art History is that the range of art that I have been interested in is narrow, and there is a lack of knowledge overall. I would like to communicate with many colleagues and broaden my perspective on art through this course.
