Important points for Unit 3 Discussion
Your posts should cover the questions below in full, and be at least 300 words long. Then reply to and peer-review at least three other posts by next Wednesday 11:59PM University Time, and rate the posts and replies.

This week I would like for you to find and review a project, organization, or park related to protecting biodiversity. Preferaby one that is near where you live. This could be a local group or non-profit organization that works to protect biodiversity. It could be a park, natural reserve, or conservation area. Or, it could be something else that is related.

Study the information you have found, then answer the following questions:

What did you choose to cover? Please list the main link to the park/reserve/organization.
Where is it located?
What is its mission?
What is one project related to biodiversity that they are doing? Please describe it (Don’t just copy and paste information form the site... please describe it in your own words).
How are human actions related to the problems they are working on?

In what ways could You participate in this project/reserve/organization you are reviewing?
Any materials cited should be referenced using the style guidelines established by the American Psychological Association (APA).

1. What did you choose to cover? Please list the main link to the park/reserve/organization.

I chose Yakushima in Japan. 20,989ha, which is about 42% of Yakushima, is a nature conservation park (Yakushima Town, n.d.). Yakushima is also known as the setting for Princess Mononoke of the Ghibli.

2. Where is it located?

Yakushima is a subtropical island off the southern coast of  Japan, and one-fifth of the island is registered as a World Natural Heritage site (Organization, J. N. T., n.d.). One of the main features of this area is that the differences in temperature and climates of the island are the largest on earth, so we can see plants from both subtropical zones and cold temperate zones of the isle (Organization, J. N. T., n.d.).

3. What is its mission?

It is their mission to protect the creatures and biodiversity unique to Yakushima.

The fauna of the island consists of 16 species of mammals, including Yaku-shika (Yakushima deer) and Yakushima-zaru (Yakushima macaque), 167 birds, 15 reptiles, and 8 amphibians, Yakushima Island is also a major spawning ground for loggerhead turtles (Yakushima (Island) National Park_Characteristics [MOE], n.d.). Untamed nature like Yakushima is sporadic in Japan.

4. What is one project related to biodiversity that they are doing? Please describe it (Don’t just copy and paste information form the site... please describe it in your own words).

First, they are regulating the number of tourists to protect the biodiversity of Yakushima. They also made “Yakushima-rules” that compile knowledge and rules for when ecotourism is carried out on Yakushima, and instruct tourists before entering the island. They thoroughly guide tourists not to "pick" or "damage" and "feed" wild plants and animals, and also set strict rules for garbage separation and excretion. This is one of the educational materials.

5. How are human actions related to the problems they are working on?

The nature reserve on Yakushima emphasizes the existence of humans itself affects other ecosystems when visited by many people, not only when we develop the land. It takes a lot of effort and consideration for us to coexist while protecting these precious natural environments. They are engaged in various activities to preserve the natural environment of Yakushima and have them think about environmental conservation in other places.

6. In what ways could You participate in this project/reserve/organization you are reviewing?

I've always wanted to go to Yakushima, but I haven't. Suppose I get the chance to go to Yakushima. In that case, I will follow the rules for protecting Yakushima, and also cooperate with their conservation efforts to pick up trash on the beach, etc., and learn more about their activities. I may be able to donate to maintain the environment.
