A sustainable food system

Your textbook discusses "Ten Steps You Can Take to Help Build a Sustainable Food System in Your Community" (Zimmerman & Snow, 2012). Please discuss and share with your peers' ways in which you may have already contributed to creating a sustainable food system in your community, or how you would start contributing to creating such a sustainable food system.

Introduction

A sustainable food system is nutritious, affordable, delicious, diverse and cultural, while minimizing the negative impacts on the environment and ecosystems during production and distribution processes; it meets the food needs both now and in the future (Zimmerman & Snow, 2012). In this discussion forum, I will describe how I have already contributed to creating a sustainable food system and other things I can do to contribute to creating a sustainable food system from now on.

The ways in which I have already contributed to creating a sustainable food system in my community

7. "Drink tap water instead of bottled water" (Zimmerman & Snow, 2012, chap.1).

I live in Japan. We can drink tap water safely in Japan, and most people drink tap water or groundwater. I also usually drink tap water, and rarely buy bottled water.

This contributes to reducing plastic waste, the energy and carbon emissions required to manufacture bottles, and the fuel and carbon emissions necessary for the sales and transportation of products.

8. "When purchasing foods, choose the ones with less packaging" (Zimmerman & Snow, 2012, chap.1).

Many supermarkets in Japan sell various products with less packaging. Simple packaging is usually applied to perishable products such as meat and fish that are not intended for long-term storage and are intended for immediate cooking. I prefer to buy products with simple packaging to cooperate with environmental protection.

As a result, it is possible to reduce the carbon generated by incinerating garbage and also diminish plastic waste, which severely impacts the natural environment and ecosystem.

The things I can do to contribute to creating a sustainable food system from now on.

2. "Join a community-based farmers' market" (Zimmerman & Snow, 2012, chap.1).

Since Japanese people usually buy food at supermarkets, farmers' market custom is not common in Japan. Having lived abroad in the past, I am familiar with the appeal of farmers' markets. I would like many Japanese to know the attractiveness of farmers' markets and want to shorten the distance between local producers and consumers.

This contributes to reducing the fuel and carbon emissions necessary for the sales and transportation of products, and everyone can buy food affordably. It can also serve as a local cultural exchange activity.

Conclusion

Japan has built a sustainable food system by using tap water and less packaging etc. These contribute to reducing plastic waste, and also reducing carbon emissions when manufacturing or incinerating containers. However, I also realized that I still have many things I can do to create a sustainable food system. For example, farmers' markets contribute to reducing the fuel and carbon emissions necessary for the sales and transportation of products, making everyone buy food affordably.

Discussion (Question)

Please share some methods already applied in your country for creating a sustainable food system. Why are those methods sustainable?? What difficulties (barriers) are there in those methods??

Thank you for reading, friends:) Have a nice day!!                (474 words)
