Based on the readings about different concepts of health, discuss what you think the concept of ‘health’ is. Discuss the various aspects of the concept that you agree with, or disagree with based on your readings.

Your Discussion should be 3-4 paragraphs in length, detailing your thoughts and position using 2-3 readings references for support.  Also, be sure to pose 1-2 well-thought-out questions from which your colleagues can formulate a response or generate further discussion.

1. The Constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO)

The Constitution of the WHO says, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (Frank, 2002, p.984).  Yes, I agree with this aspect. WHO works to improve the quality of our whole lives while focusing on our social roles. Indeed, I think the words "health" means that not only do we not have clinically diagnosed illnesses, but it also includes emotional health, which allows us to recognize your emotions and express them appropriately, and intellectual health, which enables us to think correctly and solve realistic problems according to the situation, and also social health, which allows us to build constructive and good relationships with others and society. Since the defeat in World War II, Japan has experienced economic development, infrastructure development, and medical care, and now the people's health is guaranteed to some extent. Nowadays, Japanese society attaches great importance to mental and intellectual health.

2. The Assessment and Measurement of Wellness in the Clinical Medical Setting: A Systematic Review

Bart et al. insist that wellness is "an evolving process toward achieving one’s full potential; it is positive/affirming and holistic, and encompasses lifestyle, spiritual, and environment wellbeing domains" (Bart et al., 2018, para.2). Yes, I agree with this aspect. Today's concept of health, including well-being, has shifted from "non-illness = health'' to more "way of mind'', and the concept of health has further advanced also from the definition of health in the Constitution of the WHO. And it guides doctors when they plan the treatment of their patient's illnesses and social welfare in companies in my country.

Discussion (Questions)

In some countries, the development of infrastructure and the spread of medical care has not progressed, so there might be some difference in the standards of "health" between developing and developed countries. How is "health" perceived in your country? What are the criteria for deeming "you are healthy"?
