Using the external resources of PubMed, identify a clinical disorder that represents a fundamental disturbance of the structural or functional integrity of the respiratory system and its components.  Introduce the clinical disorder to your readers, describe the impact on community health and demonstrate your understanding of the material presented in Chapter 22 by correctly defining and using at least 4 anatomic and/or physiologic terms related to the structural and/or functional organization of the human respiratory system as related to the clinical scenario you introduce to your readers.

Your discussion must be at least 250 words in length, detailing your thoughts and position using 2 references from the readings for support.  Also be sure to pose 1-2 well thought out questions from which your colleagues can formulate a response or generate further discussion.  Be sure to cite any references using APA format.

The lungs are the central organ of the respiratory system, supplying oxygen to all body tissues and removing toxic carbon dioxide from the body. The left and right bronchi connect the lungs to the trachea, while the diaphragm bounds the lower part (OpenStax, 2018). "The right lung consists of three lobes: the superior, middle, and inferior lobes, and the left lung consists of two lobes: the superior and inferior lobes" (OpenStax, 2018, chap.22). The blood supply from the pulmonary artery is deficient in oxygen and has a reddish-black color. When blood travels to the lungs, red blood cells combine with oxygen in the alveoli and are carried through blood vessels to tissues throughout the body. After oxygenating tissues throughout the body, the deoxygenated blood is transported to the alveoli where carbon dioxide is separated from the blood.

Asthma is an example of an inflammatory and chronic disease of the respiratory system. Mainly allergens cause inflammation in the bronchi and airways, causing swelling and narrowing of the air passages, causing symptoms such as coughing, dyspnea, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). Factors that trigger an asthma attack include cigarette smoke, dust mites, outdoor air pollution, allergic reactions to cockroaches, pets, mold, smoke from burning trees and grass, and infectious diseases such as the flu (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021).

Asthma affects between 3.5% and 20% of the population in any country, according to one study, and can affect everyone regardless of age or gender (Bijanzadeh et al., 2011). The incidence of asthma is higher in industrial and productive areas than in other areas. This is because chemical substances discharged from factories become allergens when combined with various substances. Asthma inheritance is not driven by classical Mendelian inheritance patterns, but is likely the result of several interacting genetic and environmental factors (Bijanzadeh et al., 2011). There is no fundamental treatment for asthma, and the standard treatment is to control symptoms through two types of drugs: a fast-acting type that calms asthma attacks and a long-acting type that suppresses asthma attacks.
