Scenario:

You’re a general practitioner and the 53-year-old patient currently on your exam table is on a tight budget. They are of the age where numerous screening tests are highly recommended, but they can only afford to have one performed at this time.

In your initial post:

  • Choose the sex of your imagined patient
  • List at least three of the screening tests they should undergo.
  • Determine the one screening test you recommend they get first
  • Discuss why you chose this test as the most important.

Your Discussion should be a minimum of 250 words in length and not more than 750 words. Use APA citations and references for the textbook and any other sources used.

In addition to the researched facts you present as your answer, you may provide opinions and real-world experiences where appropriate.

You’re a general practitioner and the 53-year-old patient currently on your exam table is on a tight budget. They are of the age where numerous screening tests are highly recommended, but they can only afford to have one performed at this time.

1. Choose the sex of your imagined patient
Woman

2. List at least three of the screening tests they should undergo.
Blood test
Urinalysis
Blood pressure
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
X-ray or Computerized tomography (CT) (chest and head)
Endoscopy (upper gastrointestinal tract, large intestine)
Mammography
cervical cancer screening (HPV)
Osteoporosis screening

3. Determine the one screening test you recommend they get first
I chose a blood test.

4. Discuss why you chose this test as the most important.
Since blood tests do not require much medical equipment and have limited personnel costs, the economic burden on patients is light. Another advantage is that blood sampling can be completed in a few minutes. Once the blood is drawn, the test items can be adjusted, and all diseases can be investigated.

A blood test is an effective means to detect abnormalities in the body quickly.
For example, it detects
・ Lipid abnormalities that lead to myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes, etc.
・Decreased liver or kidney function (Jewell & Sharon, 2021)
・Presence or absence of inflammation or tumor
・Blood disorders such as anemia and leukemia
・hormone metabolism disorder
・Sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, etc. (Jewell & Sharon, 2021)

The patient's current health condition is reflected numerically in the results. If there are no abnormalities in the blood test, the patient can feel a little relieved that there is no noticeable disease. Also, tests can be performed to investigate the abnormality further if an abnormality is found anywhere in the body. Diagnosis and treatment can be made more efficiently and economically than screening all at once. Blood tests are common and very common in my country.

In conclusion, a blood test is an effective means to detect abnormalities in the body quickly. It is undeniable that all screening tests are necessary for middle-aged female patients, but if the patient is financially limited, I will proceed with the blood test.

Questions for peers (Please refer to it when you reply to me as necessary)
・Are blood tests a financial burden on patients in your country?
・In your opinion, what is the quickest and most effective way to determine a patient's health status?
