Visit these links to learn about different ways you can help biodiversity:
- What kind of labels are listed here? Why?
- How do your consumer (buying) choices affect biodiversity?
- Pick one of these methods that you feel would be usable in YOUR city/village/town. How? Explain.
- One or two sentences or your own personal reflection on something you learned this week.
- How is the class going so far for you?
The Learning Journal entry should be a minimum of 400 words and not more than 750 words. Use APA citations and references if you use ideas from the readings or other sources.
Professor's reflection
Grades 10.00/0-10
As far as your journal is concerned, it is rich in content and very well explained. The picture is an added advantage always.
Blue economy is to be taken care of, but at the same time, boundaries over the seas is a complex issue. Countries seem to be in constant fight to acquire the rights over the seas. The issue you have mentioned proves it all.
You are doing well and will do well.
Learn and enjoy the course. I know you are doing the same.
Thank you
1. What kind of labels are listed here? Why?
Ecolabels are given to companies and products which support and protect biodiversity. Advertise those products as environmentally friendly products, communicate their activities to consumers, and enable consumers to contribute to environmental protection by purchasing these products.
2. How do your consumer (buying) choices affect biodiversity?
Producers and businesses try to meet the needs of consumers. If consumers place great importance on environmental protection, they will increase the production of corresponding products. Many consumers are hesitant to buy these eco-friendly products because they are now more expensive than regular products. Still, if these products become more popular, they will become the norm, and prices will drop, making them easier to buy. The protection of biodiversity and the environment will make significant progress when the consumption of eco-label products increases in the world.
3. Pick one of these methods that you feel would be usable in YOUR city/village/town. How? Explain.
I chose sustainable fisheries for usable methods in my city.
MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) is a global organization that develops standards for sustainable fishing and certifies seafood (from wild capture fisheries only) that comes from sustainable fisheries, and monitoring catches to maintain at levels that ensure fish populations and their ecosystems remain healthy and productive today and in the future (Cho et al., 2019). MSC provides a list of certified sustainable fish and products for responsible eating (Cho et al., 2019), but I have never seen this label around me.
More than one-third of the world's fish stocks are currently caught above sustainable levels, and the effects of climate change that are causing changes to marine ecosystems and habitats of fish stocks are also severe.
Since ancient times, Japan has culturally consumed fish in various forms, mainly sushi and grilled fish. However, in recent years, the culture of Japanese fish consumption has spread to neighboring countries such as China due to globalization, and the fish consumption of the Chinese people has increased sharply. China is currently catching large amounts in the waters near Japan, and the catch of fish originally in the seas near Japan has plummeted.
As the ultimate example, Saury is the traditional autumn delicacy of Japan, but Japan's saury catches in 2021 fell 38 pct from the previous year to 18,291 tons, hitting a record low for the third straight year, and the amount represented a drop of 85 pct from 2018 (The Jiji Press, 2022). The historic poor catches boosted trading prices in production areas by 29 pct from 2020 and more than threefold from 2018 (The Jiji Press, 2022), so we can not eat saury like before. This is undoubtedly disrupting the ecosystem balance in the waters near Japan. We need to change this situation. As intelligent predators, we must study the ecological balance of the coastal waters and protect the future of marine resources.
4. One or two sentences or your own personal reflection on something you learned this week.
I understood deforestation increases infectious disease risks, not only promotes global warming. This is because deforestation has narrowed wildlife settlements and forced them to move to human settlements, and viruses and bacteria carried by wild animals have entered the water and soil used by humans.
