The Scientific Method in Psychology

 

The scientific method is indispensable for understanding nature around and within us, even when considering our mental status or behaviors. But is the scientific method only one way to explain it? I will describe the way to study our behaviors by using other ways in this assignment.

First, how can we explain our behavior with science? Biological psychologists focus on the immediate causes of behavior-based in human physiology and study human's sensory and motor systems, sleep, ingestive behavior, nervous system, and biological correlates of psychological disorders(Spielman et al., 2017). It might be called the study based on measurable data. Usually, there are formulas, and there is a valid answer logically.

However, when we talk about “science” as only one way to explain nature and psychology, in particular, to explain human behavior, what does this mean?  I think it is superficial to regarding only science as the way to consider and explain psychology. All of us admit that various substances or hormones influence our psychological states and cause specific behaviors. But usually, it isn't easy to measure our mind or to feel as data, and it seems not easy to prove the relation between cause and effect. Our mind is too complex to explain only with science. Therefore we need to consider other ways to explain our behavior.

 

 

What other ways can we use to explain behavior? Various kinds of psychology fields have been studied currently. I will pick and describe some fields I was especially attracted to in this assignment. Developmental psychology is the scientific study of development across a lifespan focusing on changes in cognitive skills, moral reasoning, social behavior, and other psychological attributes(Spielman et al., 2017). This field inquires about scientific elements such as physical development. Still, it is mainly based on observing the differences in physical, cognitive, and social capacities between very young children and adults(Spielman et al., 2017). Moreover, social psychology focuses on how we interact with and relate to others and try to figure out how being among other people changes our own behavior and thinking patterns (Spielman et al., 2017). Sometimes these are considered with records of the history or based on observational experiments of human's activities.

In conclusion, it is quite difficult to explain our complex mind and related behavior only with science. Therefore, many psychologists apply observation of people and reasoning, conclude, and consider scientific elements. As a result, there are many fields in psychology, and psychologists are trying to deepen their understanding of human behavior.
